3rd Annual Month of Love Contest

Posted on 14 January 2010 by Tara

Did you know Valentine’s day is a month away?

I’m not a big fan of V-day, but I do LOVE thinking about love and how we change with it and how we change it.
And of course, when I think about something, it seeps into my yarn.

All this love-thinking birthed the Month Of Love series of yarns, 2 years ago.

Month of Love is a month-long yarn-party from 1/15 to 2/14 (Valentine’s Day!); I make a yarn representing a famous pairing or couple (and this year: group) every weekday for the entire month and share it the very next day.

Last year I asked for your suggestions and that post became the MOST popular post on my entire website. I got so many great ideas and awarded so many prizes and the whole thing was SO much fun, that I’ve been dying to do it again this year!

And here it is, the day before the Month of Love!

Let’s get this love-y party started!

I think I said it pretty well last year:

I’m interested in how this interplay of colors and how the addition of a color (or person) to a yarn (or your life) can change a color or at least, the perception of that color. And some couples, they just have a single color to symbolize the pairing (ex. Cheech +  Chong = green). Of course, this applies to more than just romantic couples; it happens with any sort of pairing: PB & J or Bert & Ernie.

PB & J
(PB&J, from last year’s Month Of Love)

I need help thinking up these couples AND the colors associated with them!

If you suggest a couple + color that I choose to use, you will win 50% off any skein in my shop.

To enter the contest: leave a comment below this post with both a COUPLE and their COLOR(S). You must include your email (no one will see it) so I can let you know if you’ve won. You may suggest as many couples as you like and if any couples are duplicated, the winner will be the first who mentioned both that couple and the colors I use.

For example: Sesame Street: red for Elmo, yellow for Big Bird, blue for Cookie Monster, green for Oscar
(note: I already made that yarn, so don’t suggest it!)

PS. To keep up with Month of Love yarns, you can see them on the blog every Friday and you can getthem in this section of the shop. Last year, the yarns sold out pretty much as soon as I listed them, so I’m thinking they won’t hang around for long!

You could do Ned and Chuck or Olive and Emerson from Pushing Daisies...
Ned and Chuck could be a crisp white for Ned (like his apron) building up to a vibrant yellow for Chuck (and her bees), with all kinds of buttery yellows in between! :)
For Olive and Emerson you could do a bright, sparkly light purple (for Olive because she's a bright and sparkly character) into a slick, dark purple for Emerson.
  • Buttercup and the Dread Pirate Roberts from the Princess Bride. Romance. :)

In either a very light blue and deep green/black (not quite pure black) combination or possibly a red/gold/deep brown-black colorway.
  • amycrook
So, I'm going to make a totally dorky suggestion... Can Has Cheezbrgr? With brown buns, leafy green lettuce, tomato red, cheesy yellow and deep brown burger.

Also, what about an Angel vs Devil yarn, with gold-and-white of angelic robes and a red-and-black devil to offset it.

Something from the Nutcracker, maybe, with the rich red and gold of his uniform and Clara's delicate white gown.
  • Hey Tara, is there a list somewhere of all the old colors so I don't suggest something you've already done?
  • Thanks, I'll check them out!
  • sushishel
I have two crazy kittens, Josephine and Boneparte. She has short black & white fur (tuxedo) and he has long mostly black fur. They would love to have namesake yarn. And eveyone would think you were naming it after Napoleon.
  • RedRaven
Wilbur and Charlotte! Peachy-pink and soft blue for Wilbur with gray and silvery white (for her web) for Charlotte.
  • RedRaven
Oh, and Templeton the rat (deep gray) with his love of the smorgasbord of food at the fair (rainbow of colors on this one for candy apples, cotton candy, blueberry pie, corn on the cob, etc.)
  • I've thought up some more :)

Darren & Samantha Stevens of Bewitched - black & purple Similar to the opening credits of the tv show

Mr & Mrs Howell of Gilligan's Island - Cream, Powder Blue, (Mr) and Poppy Red (Mrs)

Herman & Lily Munster - Green, Black & Grey or Silver

Max & Agent 99 of Get Smart (tv) - Men's Suit Grey & Pink
  • RedRaven
Okay, I've noticed a LOTR theme this year, so what about Sauron (don't know if I spelled that right) and The Ring? Firey red, orange, rich gold/yellow, and black.
  • Minnie Newman
And if we're doing groups....how about Big Love?!?!? A stately navy blue for the the husband/dad/patriarch. A conservative yellow for Barb An envious hunter green for Nicky. An tangerine orange for Marge.
  • Minnie Newman
Have you done Catherine and Heathcliff? I think a heathered charcoal gray and a heathered purple gray.

How about Lady and the Tramp? Definitely a blonde cocker spaniel color and gray.
  • I have an idea that works in kind of a different direction ...

Instead of specific couples/pairings, how about thinking about colors to symbolize different types of relationships, for example:

    sisterly love (pinks, oranges, reds)
frenemy love (something bright/warm and something dark)
love from afar (white with a few flecks of red or pink)
  • Oh, I really love this idea!
    Thanks so much!

  • Anja
Felix and Oscar, crisp blue and light brown.
  • amber
Scooby & Shaggy - brown with bits of black mixed with green (Shaggy's shirt) laced with yellow (his hair)

Lady & the Tramp - grey/off white mixed with tan/golden brown
  • minnienewman
Just saw your Lady and the Tramp suggestion. I am a cocker spaniel lover.
  • I'm going to start with a Pride and Prejudice theme... Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy (blue and brown, respectively). (beckytank@gmail.com)
  • Corona + Lime = Golden yellow w/lime green.

Bagel + Cream Cheese = Tan + White
  • Hi.
    Can i suggest my couple?
Our names are Paule and Joel Prittie. We met living in different cities. Being myself a montreal-born, i was living in new york. Joel is a west coaster, who was in montreal for studies. We fell in love, got engaged, and now we live together.
We share a love for everything red and white. especially red and white stripes. Our favorite season is autumn. Our favorite spice cilantro. fruit, grapefruit, which is such a pretty word in french, pamplemousse. :)
I knitted him a waldo sweater the first year we met. And then a hat.
I would love to see you interprete those little informations. Here is two pictures of us.

The muppets could be a good group with browns, green, blue, red and maybe some pink or purple (Piggy is pink but has those great purple gloves).

I also think just Kermit and Fozzy could be excellent, maybe a caramel and green with perhaps some other bits thrown in. (Thinking about their Studebaker adventure)

A different nerdy option would perhaps be Charles and Emma Darwin. Charles with earth tones & greens for the sandwalk and nature, maybe some light gray for his barnacles, offset by Emma as Wedgewood blue.
  • monthoflove suggestions for ya: Pooh & Piglet (the classic, in muted colors) Sonny & Cher-that could get wild! my favorite couple? Reese's!
  • fracksmom
Frick and Frack..... they were an ice skating team. Frack means coat in swedish. the creams/browns would be perfect for this pair
  • fracksmom
Dagwood and Blondie - wonderful brown and yellow
  • Alice + Gertrude = lavender and grey

Jane Eyre + Edward Rochester = scarlet and caramel brown

    Ohh! this is fun.
  • I just read Jane Eyre for the first time, just this month!
    So perfect!
    Thanks!

  • Katrina
The Smurfs in white, yellow, red and blue!!!
  • RedRaven
Janto could also be a nice clear red, its his favorite color.
  • No loss of street cred and a great chance to see some new (to you) TV that doesn't suck! Both seasons of Torchwoord are on Nexflix streaming. (extra geek points for this note: "torchwood" is an anagram of "doctor who")

Now if I could only come up with some famous couples to add to your yarn!
  • Is this from a movie or TV show?
Am I going to lose my street cred for not knowing this one?

British tv show plays on BBCAmerica a lot, very good show.
  • RedRaven
Capt. Jack Harkness and Janto Jones from Torchwood. They are so cute together. Blue-gray and brass-gold for Jack and rich navy and cream for Janto.
  • Sue
Okay, I was thinking of the Beatles and "Yellow Submarine" ..."sky is blue and sea is green, in our yellow submarine"... so bright blue (Paul McCartney), green (George Harrison), yellow (John Lennon) with maybe a pop art spot of red (Ringo Starr)... and yes, I am old enough to have seen their first live TV gig on Ed Sullivan because my mom let me stay up to watch!
  • Oooh, I love it! Thank you!
Huge huge Beatles fan and I've been wondering how to blend their colors and you *nailed* it! Thanks!

Pink and Green for ...Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog!
Red and Orange for...my husband and I :)
  • ridivog
I am completely obsessed with food so food couples are on my mind! How about red and yellow for ketchup and mustard? Or brown and white for cookies and milk? Or brown and lighter brownish for chocolate and peanut butter? yum!
  • kjthorp
    I like Karma's suggestion!

    How about Project Runway colorways?
Tim Gunn-- grey, cream, gray-blue, navy
Heidi-- short, tight and shiny-- oooops how about gold?
Nina Garcia-- rich infused colors, brown, black, green
    Michael Kors-- orange, red, yellow
  • Tevye and Golde from Fiddler on the Roof — Greys and beiges with nice sunset/sunrise pinks and oranges.
  • What about Sam and Dean from Supernatural?! Black and red? Brown and Red or a Crimson color? Or could be white, red and black.

Pam and Jim from The Office: Pink and White?

Pooh and Christopher Robin: Yellow and Light Blue

White Russian: White and Brown! LOL
  • Oh and Frodo and Sam! Green/Brown

    Aragorn and Arwen: Red/Blue

    Eowyn and Faramir: Gold/White

    Okay, I'll stop now..LOL
  • Cleopatra tan & Marc Antony Maroon
  • KarmaSawka
Here I am, back from Twitter, love ya!

    Green - Galadrial+Celeborn

    Karma
  • Have you tapped Gilmore Girls?

Lorelai and Rory: A vibrant purple and a softer blue

Rory and Jess: A blue (brighter than the one above, though) and green

The town leadership: Taylor Doose, Miss Patty, Kirk — pale gray, bright tomato red, and tan

Luke would naturally be a royal blue, but faded, with some white and a bit of brown thrown in (taking our cue from his ubiquitous flannel shirts); pairing him with Lorelai's royal purple (perhaps a bit of zebra-stripe black?) is the most natural choice.
  • I LOVE the Gilmores! I think I'll start with Luke & Lorelai!

    Thanks!
  • minnienewman
As the buyer of the Luke+Lorelai combo....I would buy Lorelai + Rory in a heartbeat. They are the heart of the show!
  • What color do you think they should be?
  • minnienewman
I think they should be different shades of the same color. Like deep burgundy and a lighter pink. I like that color combo in general.
  • Charlie Brown & Lucy Mustard yellow, brown and cornflower blue

And since I'm in a old school comics frame of mind: Garfield & Odie - Orange, Tan, and Cream
  • Oh my! Garfield! Peanuts! These are perfect!

    Thanks!
  • Inge
Well, my mind is still in Shrek mode after googling "green couple", but the most adorable couple in those movies must be Donkey and Dragon. The colours would be the old pink (don't know if that's a colour in English, it is in Dutch) of the Dragon and shades of grey for Donkey. I love their children as well!
  • This is so much fun... the peas and carrots made me think of Forrest and Jenny (Gump)... soft brown 'cuz life is like a box of chocolates and off-white "cuz Jennie is an angel.
  • bridgetpilloud
I can't believe somebody already said Sid and Nancy and said Black and Pink! Gah! It's my doppelganger!
Okay- How about Crockett and Tubbs- Mint Green and Pale Pink. - They made a great couple.
  • So funny! I did Crockett & Tubbs last year: http://www.blondechickenboutique.com/index.php/...

  • I'll have to be geeky and suggest Jayne and his gun Vera from Firefly (yellow, orange, red of course [and maybe black for Vera, if you're so inclined).

Don and Betty Draper would be black, grey and red.

Austin Powers and his fab date of choice would be yellow, pink, green and blue - all of the very bright variety.

Finally, I'm thinking Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy from 30 Rock would be, for whatever odd reason, yellow and black. Or maybe yellow and navy blue.

(I love this thing you do every year!)
  • Oh, Betty & Don! That's a totally new idea! It's going on the list (note to self: order black wool)
    & Liz + Jack, I love it!

(I'm going to have my geek card revoked because I totally didn't know Jayne's gun was named Vera...but I think it's time for a Firefly yarn, since I've stripped all of Joss's other shows for yarn (Buffy + Angel, Buffy+Spike, Angel + Cordie)...now I need a good Dollhouse couple...maybe just "Dollhouse" and everything is bland and beige and the same?)
    Thanks for playing!

    ________________________________
  • Dollhouse: Sierra and Victor! Not sure what their colours would be... Maybe
taken from that painting she did? Or maybe Topher and Bennett? Again not
    sure of the colours...
  • Haven't watched Season 2 yet, but I'll get it this month and watch with an eye to color (as I remember, S.1 was all gray/black/shiny).

    ________________________________
  • Ooh! You could do Alpha (he's a group unto himself, with all those personas dumped in his head) — bright, vibrant, and violent (somehow) colors. Lots of orange in Alpha. Slashing. 'Course, the same could be said (the combination being much more controlled, subdued, and intelligent) for Echo. Both are definitely shiny. Echo's more of a blues and purples (with red) combination — taking the best of each persona and blending them all together to her advantage.
  • Homer & Marge Simpson - The blue of Marge's hair and the yellow of Homer's bald head. hehe.
  • I actually did Marge + Homer in the first year - with beehives for marge's blue hair: http://www.flickr.com/photos/20921458@N05/22153...

    Feel free to suggest another!
    Thanks for playing!

  • Sid & Nancy - Black & Hot Pink with a bit of white.
  • minnienewman
    I love this idea!!!!
  • Alice
I was just about to suggest Bella, Edward, and Jacob but I see the commenter before me beat me to it. My other suggestion is peas and carrots. (green and orange of course)
  • fracksmom
Black, red and grey for the love triangle of Edward, Bella and Jacob

White and Black for Frick and Frack

Purple Blue and Black for Prince Charles and Lady Di

beige, cream, salmon for Booth and Bones (TV duo on Bones)
  • Katharine
Oberon & Titania - Midnight Blue & Forest Green.
  • If the new idea this year is groups of people, rather than just couples, my suggestion is a yarn to honor the volunteers at the American Red Cross. This would be a yarn that would incorporate shades of red from candy apple to crimson.

In times like these, especially with the recent events in Haiti, these folks are always on my mind, and they show lots of love for people in general.

Similarly, a red and black yarn could honor Doctors Without Borders.
  • amycrook
I vote for Homes + Watson, an airy soft barely-lavender grey (like intellect in yarn!) intertwined reluctantly with a warm brown that, while it might seem boring by itself, adds so much to the grey when they're together.
  • I will have to work on my "intertwined reluctantly" spinning technique for this one :)

    I love it!

Also, I need to see the new movie...have you? Did you like it?

  • amycrook
I have! I did! I wasn't sure if I would, but it was so fun and steampunky that I totally forgave how it wasn't all that Holmes-y ;)
  • Adama (Navy like his uniform) and Roslyn (maybe burgundy like her suit) from BSG. Starbuck and Apollo (not sure of colors but I'm seeing maybe a warm yellow and gray?) also from BSG. Willow and Tara from Buffy, but iffy on the colors there.
  • So funny - I was just watching BSG last night and we could NOT figure out the colors for Lee + Starbuck (didn't even think of Adama + Roslyn, but how perfect is THAT!)
When I spin the yarn, I'll let you know so you can get your discount!
    Thanks!
    Tara
