Get yarn!

Who’s the Blonde Chicken?

Hi! I'm Tara and I'm the Blonde Chicken behind all this yarn! You can read more about how I got this silly nickname here or come learn about crafting a business here.

Get love. Yarn Love

Love notes when there's fresh yarn

3rd Annual Month of Love Contest

Did you know Valentine’s day is a month away?

I’m not a big fan of V-day, but I do LOVE thinking about love and how we change with it and how we change it.
And of course, when I think about something, it seeps into my yarn.

All this love-thinking birthed the Month Of Love series of yarns, 2 years ago.

Month of Love is a month-long yarn-party from 1/15 to 2/14 (Valentine’s Day!); I make a yarn representing a famous pairing or couple (and this year: group) every weekday for the entire month and share it the very next day.

Last year I asked for your suggestions and that post became the MOST popular post on my entire website. I got so many great ideas and awarded so many prizes and the whole thing was SO much fun, that I’ve been dying to do it again this year!

And here it is, the day before the Month of Love!

Let’s get this love-y party started!

I think I said it pretty well last year:

I’m interested in how this interplay of colors and how the addition of a color (or person) to a yarn (or your life) can change a color or at least, the perception of that color. And some couples, they just have a single color to symbolize the pairing (ex. Cheech +  Chong = green). Of course, this applies to more than just romantic couples; it happens with any sort of pairing: PB & J or Bert & Ernie.

PB & J
(PB&J, from last year’s Month Of Love)

I need help thinking up these couples AND the colors associated with them!

If you suggest a couple + color that I choose to use, you will win 50% off any skein in my shop.

To enter the contest: leave a comment below this post with both a COUPLE and their COLOR(S). You must include your email (no one will see it) so I can let you know if you’ve won. You may suggest as many couples as you like and if any couples are duplicated, the winner will be the first who mentioned both that couple and the colors I use.

For example: Sesame Street: red for Elmo, yellow for Big Bird, blue for Cookie Monster, green for Oscar
(note: I already made that yarn, so don’t suggest it!)

PS. To keep up with Month of Love yarns, you can see them on the blog every Friday and you can getthem in this section of the shop. Last year, the yarns sold out pretty much as soon as I listed them, so I’m thinking they won’t hang around for long!

I have an idea that works in kind of a different direction …

Instead of specific couples/pairings, how about thinking about colors to symbolize different types of relationships, for example:

    sisterly love (pinks, oranges, reds)
frenemy love (something bright/warm and something dark)
love from afar (white with a few flecks of red or pink)

  • Minnie Newman

Have you done Catherine and Heathcliff? I think a heathered charcoal gray and a heathered purple gray.

How about Lady and the Tramp? Definitely a blonde cocker spaniel color and gray.

  • Minnie Newman

And if we're doing groups….how about Big Love?!?!? A stately navy blue for the the husband/dad/patriarch. A conservative yellow for Barb An envious hunter green for Nicky. An tangerine orange for Marge.

  • minnienewman

    I love this idea!!!!

  • minnienewman

Just saw your Lady and the Tramp suggestion. I am a cocker spaniel lover.

As the buyer of the Luke+Lorelai combo….I would buy Lorelai + Rory in a heartbeat. They are the heart of the show!

  • RedRaven

Okay, I've noticed a LOTR theme this year, so what about Sauron (don't know if I spelled that right) and The Ring? Firey red, orange, rich gold/yellow, and black.

What color do you think they should be?

  • http://blondechicken.blogspot.com blondechicken

Oh, I really love this idea!
    Thanks so much!

I've thought up some more :)

Darren & Samantha Stevens of Bewitched – black & purple Similar to the opening credits of the tv show

Mr & Mrs Howell of Gilligan's Island – Cream, Powder Blue, (Mr) and Poppy Red (Mrs)

Herman & Lily Munster – Green, Black & Grey or Silver

Max & Agent 99 of Get Smart (tv) – Men's Suit Grey & Pink

  • RedRaven

Wilbur and Charlotte! Peachy-pink and soft blue for Wilbur with gray and silvery white (for her web) for Charlotte.

  • RedRaven

Oh, and Templeton the rat (deep gray) with his love of the smorgasbord of food at the fair (rainbow of colors on this one for candy apples, cotton candy, blueberry pie, corn on the cob, etc.)

  • minnienewman

I think they should be different shades of the same color. Like deep burgundy and a lighter pink. I like that color combo in general.

I have two crazy kittens, Josephine and Boneparte. She has short black & white fur (tuxedo) and he has long mostly black fur. They would love to have namesake yarn. And eveyone would think you were naming it after Napoleon.

Hey Tara, is there a list somewhere of all the old colors so I don't suggest something you've already done?

So, I'm going to make a totally dorky suggestion… Can Has Cheezbrgr? With brown buns, leafy green lettuce, tomato red, cheesy yellow and deep brown burger.

Also, what about an Angel vs Devil yarn, with gold-and-white of angelic robes and a red-and-black devil to offset it.

Something from the Nutcracker, maybe, with the rich red and gold of his uniform and Clara's delicate white gown.

No loss of street cred and a great chance to see some new (to you) TV that doesn't suck! Both seasons of Torchwoord are on Nexflix streaming. (extra geek points for this note: “torchwood” is an anagram of “doctor who”)

Now if I could only come up with some famous couples to add to your yarn!

  • http://schroteri.etsy.com/ Caitlin O.

Buttercup and the Dread Pirate Roberts from the Princess Bride. Romance. :)

In either a very light blue and deep green/black (not quite pure black) combination or possibly a red/gold/deep brown-black colorway.

You could do Ned and Chuck or Olive and Emerson from Pushing Daisies…
Ned and Chuck could be a crisp white for Ned (like his apron) building up to a vibrant yellow for Chuck (and her bees), with all kinds of buttery yellows in between! :)
For Olive and Emerson you could do a bright, sparkly light purple (for Olive because she's a bright and sparkly character) into a slick, dark purple for Emerson.

I have to put in my very favorite couple real quick even though it isn’t super original. I’ll be back with other ideas…

Phantom (Erik) and Christine. Black/red/white for Phantom and pink for Christine.

    Thanks!
But this is the post for last year, I’ll be making a new post for this year on
Monday. Come back then and make your suggestions so you’re entered to win!

Thanks again and sorry for the confusion!
