Ask Tara – Getting the yarn to the bobbin

Ask Tara is a  weekly-ish feature in which I attempt to answer your questions about spinning, dyeing or confusing knitting acronyms. If you have a question, ask it in the comments and I’ll answer it here with either a post or a video!

Sodalimegirl, a YouTube viewer, asks:

Could you  show how you initially get your wool onto the wheel and how it gets all set up to spin. In your videos you already have spun wool on the wheel when you do your demos.

Excellent question! This is something so innate, I barely think about it. In preparing for this video, I realized I might do it completely different from someone else. How do you do it?

Here’s how I start each skein of yarn:

What do you think?

Is this how you get started? If not, how?

Have a spinning or dyeing question? Leave it in the comments!

Yay! I’m so glad it was helpful! Just ask if you have any other questions (other people probably have them too!)

Sweet!!! Again, THANK YOU!! I have a Louet and an older spinning wheel, and could not find any good way to get started!! You are such a help to me!! :D

Would you recommend the Kiwi as a good first spinning wheel to start with?
It kind of appeals to me, and I like the double treadle and the simplicity of it. I'd like to get a wheel, but is obviously quite a big purchase (though not as big as getting a drum carder as well!). The Kiwi looks the best, cheapest option. How long have you been using yours?

I really like your site, your yarn and all your videos. :)

I've had my wheel for 3 years – I got it before I learned to spin! I've completely learned on the Kiwi and absolutely love it!

Thanks Tara. I think I am going to get one. :) I'm selling some slings and cloth nappies to help raise funds. I saw some online where people had painted and customised the wheel before putting together and I think that would be really cool to do too. :) If I could manage to be patient enough to do customise it before building it!
