I started with Red Heart acrylic yarn in a deep burgundy color. When I start young kids on knitting I tell them to pick some smooth worsted yarn at the craft store (which is almost always acrylic). When I teach my friends I let them pick some of the little odd balls of yarn I have lying around. I figure if they pick something they like the feel and color of, they will keep with it! :)
